Early invasion of common cordgrass (Spartina anglica) increases belowground biomass and decreases macrofaunal density and diversity in a tidal flat marsh

چکیده

Spartina anglica (hereafter Spartina) is an invasive perennial marsh grass shifting hydrodynamic regime and sediment characteristics in invaded area, thereby reducing macrobenthic diversity. There have been only a few studies focusing on the patch structure of according to size its effects macrofauna. A field experiment was conducted identify patches where they introduced no later than 5 years after invasion occurred macrofauna assemblages Ganghwa Island, South Korea. The survey area divided into two sections vegetation: (1) Suaeda japonica vegetation from 0 60 m away levee, (2) bare mudflat 90 levee. sizes were categorized small (1–4 m2), medium (5–11 large (13–40 m2) with four replicates for each section. biomass ratio belowground aboveground significantly higher those Spartina. It indicated that more resource allocated rhizomes short history (1 ~ 2 years). After invaded, richness (70%), Shannon–Wiener diversity (80%), density (67%) decreased. However, infaunal deposit-feeding polychaete Perinereis linea epifaunal gastropods Batillaria cumingi Lactiforis takii increased by Ordination macroinvertebrate separated habitat adjacent uninvaded tidal flat habitats. This study offers significant insight early strategies aggressive plant invader, management coastal wetlands impacts macrofaunal assemblages.

Benthic metabolism and sulfur cycling along an inundation gradient in a tidal Spartina anglica salt marsh

Central aspects of carbon and sulfur biogeochemistry were studied along a transect extending from an unvegetated mudflat into a Spartina anglica salt marsh. Conditions along the transect differed with respect to tidal elevation, sediment characteristics, vegetation coverage, and benthic macrofauna abundance. Dark sediment O2 uptake and CO2 emission at the highly bioturbated mudflat were low and...

Effects of Spartina alterniflora invasion on distribution of Moerella iridescens in a tidal flat of Western Pacific Ocean

The invasion of Spartina alterniflora significantly affected the local ecosystem of Western Pacific Ocean where Moerella iridescens lives. Five patches with different invasion stages of S. alterniflora were selected and the influence on distribution of M. iridescens was studied on the coast of Wenzhou Bay, China in 2007. The aggregated distribution pattern was proved by using Taylor&#39s power ...

Improving Management Practices for Invasive Cordgrass in the Pacific Northwest: A Case Study of Spartina anglica

Invasive species can radically alter the landscape and crowd out native plants and animals — a problem that costs the United States more than $100 billion each year. Washington state wrestles with dozens of aquatic invasive species including several cordgrasses in the genus Spartina. S. alterniflora was introduced into Willapa Bay about 100 years ago and has colonized over 6000 hectares of prev...

Benthic macrofaunal communities of three sites in San Francisco Bay invaded by hybrid Spartina, with comparison to uninvaded habitats

A hybrid cordgrass, formed from a cross between Spartina alterniflora (Atlantic cordgrass) and S. foliosa (Pacific cordgrass), has recently spread within the intertidal zone of south San Francisco Bay. Sediment properties and macroinfaunal community structure were compared in patches invaded by Spartina hybrid and adjacent uninvaded patches at 3 sites in San Francisco Bay (2 tidal flats and 1 S...
